Anatolians and Kids - LA

Louisiana that is!

Great pics! Had to share.

Kelly had gotten her first Anatolian from me from about 12 years ago. She now has a family and two younger Anatolians. Both Rossi and Jersey are pet sister siblings from the same litter (Nov 2002) and get along just fine. When Jasmine passed on (1994-2005), both of the girls continued with the job of being wonderful family guardians.

Just took a couple of pictures of Brooke playing with Jersey and Rossi tonight. Brooke just kept hugging Jersey and saying "oohhhhhhh." Rossi wouldn't have any of the hugs, but really wanted Brooke to chase her. She would lay real still until Brooke got about 2 feet away and then she'd dash to another part of the yard. Brooke thought it was great fun, and you can see her hollering as she's running to get Ross... ;)

He is sometimes worried, confused or unsettled when some unfamiliar events occur, or new levels of trust are asked of him in his new partnership - things that most other Anatolians take for granted, he tends to be wary of. He is making progress, slowly but surely.

Canceling AOL - on MSNBC.com

I've spent over ten years as an administrator of several types of forums and continue to be involved with many online projects requiring internet communication, so I'm rather familiar with many of the mobius loops by way of challenges presented by America On Line and its customers as it regards connectivity.

So I got a kick out of this report at MSNBC Canceling AOL can be a tough call and its related links this morning! :)

I had AOL in the early 90s and my opinion is that it remains a nice BBS sort of community, its own sort of Planet AOL -- but AOL is simply not true internet connectivity. That said, there are many ISP which really do not live up to the name of Internet Service Providers, in the sense that "Service" was once intended to mean!

Computer Security - Download Nightmare

One of several internet security newsletters I get featured this story of how an innocent seeming download turned out within seconds to be a Security nightmare.

Anyone that downloads anything from the web (including web pages to be viewed like this one!) should take heed. There are many stories in the category of "Most Recent Horror Stories" at the C|Net site. I've read several accounts on various other sites as well, where merely clicking 'no' when prompted with the question, "Download now?", may actually trigger the download regardless of your selection. -- Perhaps, closing the browser window entirely may be safer in some cases.

There are increased warnings regarding potential for malignant and invasive javascript worms. Possibly the only way to be immune is to disable javascript in all one's browsers, except perhaps tweaks permitted for trusted sites.

A lot of webpages are built with bells and whistles that use relatively innocent javascript, such as blogrolling tools which let you know when pages have updated to tools that figure out which browser you are using, in order to present that web page correctly.

Malware developments along these lines could get very interesting as more people may once again decide to turn off javascript. It wasn't long ago that we often disabled javascript because it didn't always work properly, and now, perhaps javascript is enabled so well, that it is just about the most unsafe way to surf. If disabled, elements of fancy web pages with javascript (including navigation) will not load and will need to be rewritten -- if plain text HTML links are not already included.

yawningdog sent us a woof // July 07, 2006 I just heard about 'negative' agreements. If you hit the X and close a pop up, you may have justed negatively agreed to the service. I guess this is really appearing in pop ups that show up after you make an online purchase. The company you are buying from gives your credit card info to the pop up company. (That would be the last purchase I did with such a company.) Hit F4 to close out pop ups.
Semavi Lady sent us a woof // July 08, 2006 I do a lot of research online and sometimes end up on spammy sites that try to install things or give weird javascript pop ups. Sometimes I have such a bad feeling about the site, I shut down the browser entirely. Then enter the site into my hosts file as a 127.0.0.1 (localhost) which means that next time I end up going to that website, my computer points to itself instead of going there. Pretty useful since I'm not ready to entirely turn off javascript for all sites.

Holy Liftoff, Batman! It's a Butt Rocket!

Egads, I'm never going to win any awards for keeping up with what people have invented. While trying to remember something about some canine elbow pads for protecting the elbows of big dogs (they sometimes get callouses, hygromas and other injuries there), I ran into a Y2K patent for a ~~butt rocket~~ "Toy gas fired missle and launcher assembly" (United States Patent 6055910). Be sure to scroll down a bit on the page to get more details. The PDF document contains schematic diagrams.

It is said: Necessity is the mother of invention - but I think some other rules apply to this one!

Wolf Photos and EEK! A 3 Foot Cottonmouth!

Well, it wasn't Madonna's bra. . .

Time... Yesterday morning, looking past Zor (my 8 year old Anatolian female) who was laying down amidst bits of torn paper and chewed up things. Off in the near distance were a pair white curved things laying on the ground that shouldn't have been there. I'd have to go check it out.

After seeing the evidence up close I had a laugh.

When in pairs, cone shaped, pointy things usually remind me of too much adolescent humor.

Referring, of course, to Madonna's famous pointy bra.

Couldn't help it... I was laughing laughing out loud. :D

Well chewed up funnels!

Not much left of the funnels!

I thought, well, James will not be pleased, but I was still laughing. Since it was also nearby, I put what remains of a large cotton chew rope that was once a couple feet long right next to the funnels (the rest of that rope was nearby too). Just more evidence of how important chewing is!

Got the evidence.

Apparently James had handled the funnels and didn't put them away or if he had put them away, they were found anyway. Personalities and quirks are part of life with dogs. I'm sure it was Zor that did that. Zor loves to claim things laying around that James has personally touched and 'abandoned', including tools and bags of nuts and bolts. Some strange sort of scent and chew fetish I guess!

Glad she can't reach his cell phone or remotes!

So sweet, even is she is naughty.

James stepped out of the house and wondered what I was about. After I pointed out "Madonna's bra" to James, he gave an exasperated sigh and muttered, "Zor".

Of course, she's been following him and since he's standing still for a moment observing the crime scene, AND mentions her name.... Zor wisks up to his side and immediately leans on him heartily with a huge happy grin on her face.

And what does he do? He's rubbing her ears while he's telling her what a naughty brat she is.

Must be love.

Leigh-Ann sent us a woof // June 17, 2006 Dante once took the entire Yellow Pages outside and tore them up. For days we'd see little bits of yellow paper floating through the air... The thing which surprises me most about Dante is that he hasn't outgrown his love of chewing on the forbidden. I think he's just trying to keep us on our toes.
Semavi Lady sent us a woof // June 17, 2006 Egads, does that mean the Yellow Pages of Las Vegas?!! Oh my goodness! LOL That must be twice as big as most phone books! Our other problem chewer was years ago. That Anatolian loved to chew garden hoses and often left 6 inch sections laying around anytime one of us forgot to put various hoses away. :( Oddly, that dog really wasn't a problem chewer for anything else... just garden hoses.

Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Do Dog Shows

Apparently, fun(ny) should be had by all who read this story! THE LIGHTER SIDE! over at Gypsy Anatolians.

. . . So, I explained that they were rather large, but that one would be crated and they would be quiet (I was saying a silent prayer at this point!) She then asked if they were more than 35 pounds. Well, Bear is about 140 lbs. and Brinks is 82 lbs. Wanting to avoid calling 911, I just said yes they were. . .

Yep, you know it... you gotta go there now. Read it and laugh out loud! :D

Carina sent us a woof // June 14, 2006 Nice site! I found you through Blog Pound. I grew up in Turkey and well remember the Turkish guardian dogs. If I ever get past my Rottweiler habit (and have more room) I'd love to have one. I met an Anatolian at an agility trial last weekend. Of all things, an agility Anatolian. She was pretty good, too! Extremely aloof, typical, beautiful dog.

New Turkish Collars at Andrea's Taking My Time

Andrea's website has some snazzy new Western style concho collars and several Turkish buffalo leather collars with metal trim. Among these are a few with FLASHY day-glo/neon pink felt lining -- the very popular and showy Turkish BIG dog collars with the assorted metal bells. (see a similar one below)

Nearly gone now, are the last of her Turkish beaded collars and the custom Kilim and leather dog collars which fit medium sized dogs. Not many left. Lots of eye candy there. :)

I can't resist! These below are not the new collars, but I have a few 2005 pics of Gerlach Beau modeling a couple collars when I last visited him in Napa. They are just 'ok' pics but still nice enough to share because the collars are so impressive. :p

The above collar is meant to be showy and is often displayed on prized Turkish stud dogs. This one has nylon instead of buffalo leather strapping.

This collar is intended to protect the flock guarding dog from getting gripped around the neck if the dog has to face off with a Turkish wolf. Beau doesn't have the collar completely fastened around his neck so it looks loose. These collars fit very snugly.

In the USA, we like to collect these awesome collars as decorations. NOTE the very cautious hand avoiding those spikes! :)

Lean On Me - Anatolian Shepherd Dog Style

Anatolians are leaners. That is, when they are comfortable or being affectionate with someone, one of the ways they express this happy mood is to lean against that person. :D

Of course, when the person is sturdy, not caught by surprise and can handle it, it's such a sweet thing to observe.

Here are two photos of Zor (mother of Ruya) leaning against or about to lean against James.

Zor with a expression of sweet affection and concentration, catching her just as she is about to flop over (TIMBERRRRRR!!!) against James. That's Boone on the ground leaning his head on James' boots.

Zor leaning on James as he talks to me from the doorway. The glow in her eyes is from the camera flash rather than a very probable psychedelic high she seems to get from this leaning behavior...

Ah, that wonderful togetherness factor :)

A problem with all this affectionate leaning is that Anatolians will also lean on small or frail humans that they adore. This can result in humans flopping over like so many dominoes! And sometimes the Anatolian is so sure you will be there at the moment that they flop over on you, if you do move, they WILL fall over. Now is that like one of those Corporate Team Building Trust exercises or what?

Anatolian Pow-wow

One prevention is get everyone seated, or to have the dog lay down next to the person of their affections, or to sit in front of the person and gently accept attention.

My kind of doggie people are perfectly happy to sit on the ground or on a big blankie with the dogs sprawled around them, but of course, this is not always convenient nor necessarily considered civilized when the ground is yucky and the dogs covered with mud.

Anatolians can be taught to do a gentle handshake and kids really are thrilled with shaking hands with a dog that is as big as they are. Don't encourage pawing (those BIG paws can be a bit MUCH!), but shaking hands on command only.

The Anatolian Lap dog

Ruya loves getting into the laps of people she likes. And she really likes Karolyn.

Karolyn came to visit and was sitting on the outdoor loveseat glider in the yard and Ruya just had to get up there and join her. Look at the smiles!

Soooooo Happy Together...

Note in the above picture, the loveseat is about as wide as two adult sized occupants. Ruya takes up most of the chair because she needs room for her front paws and her butt. She looks a little cramped with her elbows bent so that she can fit her paws on the chair.

It's a tight fit for Ruya when she's laying with her head across someone's lap while on the glider. Her legs are so long they want to flop off of the swing, but she manages somehow to look pretty comfy. Funny girl. It's the thought that counts! :D

Dave Koerner got the first picture of the pair posing. And I couldn't resist getting the second picture. They are both so photogenic! B)

Normally Ruya ignores the glider, but occasionally gets up on it if someone is near it and she thinks she can 'talk' them into joining her on the seat. After she leaps up onto it, the glider jiggles rapidly back and forth under her weight, but Ruya doesn't seem to be unnerved by it at all and doesn't jump off. She seems to think that is fun since she's usually 'rewarded' by convincing her target to join her on the chair. :p

He's the same way - just drapes himself over you - but he's also my pocket dog because I take him everywhere with me like you do froo froos. It's not fair that only froo froos get to go shopping.
